Epistemological Objections to Platonism
This is not quite that. The author clarifies in the preface how the book is first and foremost a critique of naturalism, with Platonism effectively playing the role of the fallback guy after the flaws of naturalism have been sufficiently established, thereby ruling out a completely empirical mathematics in favor of the last man standing: Platonism. Indeed, James Robert Brown is best when he is on the attack, with his cursory account of Platonism leaving something to be desired and the naturalism-of-convenience advanced by his opponents presenting him with an irresistible opportunity to pick away at a weaker theory rather than waste precious pages supporting a less than obvious stance that there exists a realm of abstract objects.
Of course fictionalism, structuralism, logicism, etc might still prove superior alternatives to Platonsim even if we reject naturalism, as none of these rely upon naturalism for their validity, but there is still enough in this book about Platonism itself to suggest otherwise. For starters, Platonism is just a more natural no pun intended fit for an account of the independent character math seems to have from both the mind and the world, with the world conforming to precise geometric structures and physical constants and yet the world is not itself an abstract entity The phenomenal universe having spatio-temporal properties and the causal powers forms lack.
The answer to an equation is fixed in eternity by a proper understanding of the right rules and relation between numbers, something we are powerless to affect, though we can change ourselves for the better by applying our intellect to the timeless, transcendental problems intuition reveals and mathematics can resolve. From a socio-historical perspective, the intersubject agreement, cross-cultural use not making of mathematics and its fruitful developments as a field of inquiry, are telling signs that math lies far outside us.
Before I move back onto the content of the book, I should mention why this is a problem at all, the nature of mathematics that is.

For the naturalist, mathematics is, of the serious disciplines, the "odd-man-out", in a certain manner of speaking. The problem is worse yet when trying to define a naturalism which identifies itself with science, with the best sciences depending heavily on mathematical description.
