Unfortunately, a lot of people get caught up in the hustle and bustle of their own lives, that they forget to think about others. We are all on this crazy roller coaster of a ride that we call life, together. Why not support one another through the highs and lows? When we step outside of our own world and contribute to the lives of others , it gives us a sense of purpose. No contribution is too small. By turning your focus on others, you will gain more perspective on your challenges, realizing that they aren't as bad as you made them out to be. We can improve our own lives, simply by helping others improve theirs.

What a simple and beautiful idea. Moreover, helping others is infectious. Those who feel your compassion will, in turn, be inspired to be more compassionate themselves. Be the change that you desire to see in the world. It's the little things in life that can have the biggest impact. An attitude of gratitude helps us to value the little things in life that we often take for granted. This is why I am a big believer in the power of a morning ritual. By starting your day with a grateful heart and being present with yourself, it gives you the inspiration that you need in order to see the good in everything.

This is why I love keeping a gratitude journal. By recording my daily blessings, I move throughout my day feeling more optimistic and happier overall. The next time that you get down or feel like life isn't going your way, take a moment and think about all the things that you are grateful for. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude takes time and patience.

However, once you have adopted this positive habit, I promise that your life will transform for the better. I believe that if we want to feel fully alive and happy, we need to live in the present moment. In other words, we are not present for almost half of our lives, proving that a wandering mind is not a happy mind. Being mindful allows us to appreciate the little things in life, instead of worrying about what's to come. Being present starts with self-awareness. It's about paying attention to what is going on around you, without trying to change anything.

A great way to ensure that you are living in the present moment every day is to create a morning ritual. When you wake up, it is so important to not get caught up in your thoughts. The morning is an opportunity for you to start fresh and set the tone for your day. As part of your ritual, I encourage you to create a mindfulness practice, like yoga or meditation. Doing so will allow you to calm your mind, connect with yourself, and feel a sense of deep gratitude for yourself and your life.

Research has shown that smiling releases serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that produces feelings of happiness and well-being. Think about the little things in life that make you smile, whether that's listening to the sound of the rain, walking in nature, writing in your journal, or enjoying a bath. The people that find a reason to smile, despite their life circumstances, are oftentimes the most resilient.

Every time shit hits the fan, although they may be disappointed, they will still remain hopeful and determined to find the silver lining. I even had someone tell me that I was playing small. Stephenson, which features fraud within the police, abuse within the prison service and injustices in the courts and has been featured in the press and on TV. Sneering scorn and derision from this, the person I had hired to help me grow my business. The aggression in her voice was ugly. I could see her eyes bulging, veins throbbing, spit flying through the air, even over the phone. I was pacing up and down my kitchen in pyjamas, with sweaty palms and slippers, listening to a tirade of abuse, and feeling my business come crumbling down around me.

She may as well have said. A lifestyle business to her was the ultimate insult. My mind was wandering again. Must pay attention. I gave myself a virtual shake and snapped back into the conversation to be bombarded by more vicious words flying like daggers down the phone. My ear, pressed hard against the phone, was burning.

I wondered whether it was about to spontaneously combust and blow my eyebrows clean off. The phone, not my ear, obviously. I felt a molten volcano of rage rise up within me. The worm was turning. Which meant I was the worm; not ideal, but for now it would have to do. You can expect to hear from my lawyer. Admittedly, that comment heralded all kinds of mayhem, levels of stress previously unknown in the Finer household and a six-month legal wrangle worthy of its own box set, but it certainly felt good to say.

For that split second I stood tall, slippers replaced with virtual heels, a sharp suit, pointy shoulder pads and bouffy hair. In your face, bitch! I put down the phone, hand shaking, and started to cry. Prayer, meditation, exercise and a little quiet time to think can have a monumental impact on your day, week and year. I always ask my clients when they can create this thinking and planning time, and where this can best occur. My most important decisions and changes began after I had the time to really think about what I wanted.

Predictable days and habits keep us in a rut. Every week, pick one new small change you want to make. Even a small change, such as watching an interesting TED Talk while getting ready in the morning or experimenting with a new menu item on the grill can trigger new energy. Listening is the most powerful learning tool and relationship builder you have at your disposal, but in our fast-paced, technology-driven world, it is wildly underutilized.

Ask questions and really listen, rather than thinking about what you are going to say next. Your full attention is one of the greatest compliments you can give to someone. The desire to always be right can overshadow even the strongest relationship. Being right at all costs might fulfill an inner need you have, but often at the expense of someone or something else. Consider this situation: Is there only one answer? Do we need to agree?

Of course, keep your point of view and speak up for values and causes that matter. But if your desire to be right overtakes you in any situation regardless of importance or relationship, a change might do some good. Small changes made consistently over time can have a big impact on your life. And they are all actions you can take starting today.
